How to Become a Facial Specialist in Florida?
Are you ready to follow your dreams and become a licensed facial specialist (esthetician)? Florida is the perfect place to do it! It’s no secret that Florida has become one of the epicenters of the beauty industry in the United States. Some of the country’s most renowned spas are located in Florida. However, the question still remains, how do you become a facial specialist in Florida? Let’s get into it!
Enroll in An Facial Specialist Program
The first step to becoming a facial specialist (esthetician) in Florida is enrolling in a spa training program. The Commission for Independent Education requires students to be at least 16 years of age or have a high school diploma. In order to receive your facial specialist license, you’ll need to complete a spa training program consisting of 260 training hours. At International Academy, you’ll need to complete 310 hours which includes intense skin and spa training.
Keep in mind that when choosing a school you’ll want to pick somewhere that has your best interest in mind and teaches you the latest industry techniques. Some of the skills you can learn at International Academy’s spa training program include:
- Facials
- Ultrasonic Methods
- Microdermabrasion
- Exfoliating Peels
- Massage Techniques
- Makeup Application
- Body Treatments
- And more!
These are just a few of the things you can learn in our program. Students can gain knowledge of the skin including structures and functions and the proper use of skincare treatments. Our program is designed with theory and hands-on training. After learning different skincare techniques, you’ll be able to grow your skills in our student spa.
Picking the right program is crucial when getting your license because it is where you’re going to learn the majority of the skills you need in order to be successful in the industry.
Complete a Board-Approved HIV/AIDS Course
Unlike other states, you don’t have to sit for any written or practical exams in order to receive your state licenses. However, applicants will need to complete a board-approved HIV/AIDS course. These courses help ensure the safety of facial specialists, their clients, and others in the community.
Complete and Submit Your Application
After finishing up your program and graduating from beauty school, the next step is complete and submit your facial specialist application. While the state of Florida doesn’t require you to pass any written or practical exams, you’ll still have to pass International Academy’s requirements. When submitting your application, you’ll need to do the following:
- Complete Sections I-II and IV-VI on the application
- Pay the $85 application fee
- Submit proof of HIV/AIDS course completion
- Have your school submit the “Certification of Eligibility” portion
- Submit course evaluation documentation
That’s it! Easy right? After submitting your application and the proper documentation, you’ll officially become a licensed facial specialist in the State of Florida.
Start Looking into Different Opportunities
After you’ve received your license, the final thing to do is start checking out different careers. One of the best things about the beauty industry is that it is ever-changing, meaning there are always opportunities to explore. While most facial specialists work in a spa setting, a facial specialist license can open a lot of doors for you that go beyond the spa. Regardless of where your license will take you, you’ll now have the opportunity to help people achieve their skincare goals.
Renewing Your License
If you’re looking to continue practicing as a facial specialist in Florida, you’ll need to renew your license prior to October 31st, every other year. The renewal application fee is $55 and you are also required to complete at least 10 hours of continued education during your two-year renewal period. Each continuing education credit should include:
-
- The date, time, and location of the course
- The subjects covered in the course
- The number of credits received for the course
Continued education is a great way to expand your knowledge and skills. Many facial specialists in Florida end up becoming certified in electrology, body wrapping, or permanent makeup. Whichever you choose, it is important to keep your continued education documentation safe for the next time you have to renew your license.
